Keep your keywords which are more related to your site and also have more search counts. This should be very helpful to get more traffic through search engines. How? See, your target keywords are as visitors search query so all of them visit your site when your site get first position on SERP to your target keywords.
For a new site, create your domain with your preferred keyword(for instance If I prefer keyword as seo tips, I try to get the new domain as getseotips.com). It helps to increase the weight of keywords on search engine eyes. Other wise place your keywords on meta tag, content , important HTML tags as heading. Add alt title by using your keywords if use any images are related to your site and insert the static link to that keywords at the bottom of your content .

As per search engines view, the following domains are different http://www.yourdomain.com, http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php with same content. So search engines take these pages as mirror pages. Search engines penalize you if you are not redirect the URL .
Include Robots.txt and upload on your root domain directory. For instance mydomain.com/robot.txt. It is search engine friendly . It also helps to prevent the search engine crawler for certain pages which would be needed to change.
Include sitemap as .html and .xml format. Sitemap.html helps to navigate the visitors . It is user friendly. It has the list of links to certain pages. Sitemap.xml helps to increase the visibility of inner pages on Search engine eyes. It is one of the way to inform about your inner pages to search engines for indexing. Sitemap.html and sitemap.xml present in root domain as robots.txt.
